Frequently Asked Questions:
What if my social work program wasn’t accredited by CSWE?
You may still complete the online trainings and face-to-face workshops, and earn certification in each individual VSW content area.
What do you mean by “registered with the health related boards in their state of residence”?
Social work licensure varies significantly by jurisdiction. We do not require our applicants to be licensed to practice social work independently, but we ask that you be an LMSW, registered social work intern, or the comparable license for your state.
What if I have a social work degree, but am now a Licensed Veterinary Technician or Veterinarian?
Great! Submit your applicable license with your other VSW application materials.
I’m a mental health professional, but not a social worker. Can I earn the VSW Certificate?
You can currently take any of our online modules or face-to-face workshops for continuing education contact hours. Or, check back in the winter of 2018, when we plan to offer a Veterinary Social Support Certificate for mental health professionals.
I’m an animal-related professional, but I don’t have a social work degree. Can I earn the VSW Certificate?
You can currently take any of our online modules or face-to-face workshops for continuing education hours. Or, check back in the winter of 2018, when we plan to offer a Veterinary Human Support Certificate for animal-related professionals.
What if I don’t have my MSW degree?
If you are considering options for graduate school, click here for information about the University of Tennessee’s Concurrent MSSW/VSW degree program.
If you are currently enrolled in another school’s MSW program, you may start the modules while finishing your degree, and complete your service learning project after graduation.
Do you provide locations for service learning projects?
Veterinary social work is still growing, and spreading the word is an important part of earning the certificate. While we do not match participants with service learning projects, we’re happy to help you create your proposal. Many of our participants are able to design VSW projects at their current jobs!
When is group supervision offered?
Supervision sessions will occur between January and March each year. Each session will be two hours long. Each content area will have two sessions. Generally the sessions will occur between 10:00 am 12:00 pm ET on Mondays. This, however, is subject to change based on the availability of participants and subject area experts. A supervision schedule will be posted November 1st each year.
